How does Gepan® instill work?
After instillation into the bladder Gepan® instill lines the damaged parts of the bladder wall – like a kind of liquid band aid on a wound. This restores the protective layer, and irritant substances in the urine are prevented from penetrating into deeper lying tissue. Symptoms such as frequent bladder voiding, a strong, difficult suppressible urinary urgency and persisting pain in the pelvic region can be relieved.
Normally, glycosaminoglycans together with water form a protective mucus layer in the bladder known as the GAG-layer. This prevents irritant substances in the urine from coming into direct contact with the bladder wall.
A damaged GAG-layer can cause the symptoms of chronic forms of cystitis. Components of the urine, such as potassium ions, can irritate the tissue and thereby cause an intense urinary urgency, a frequent bladder voiding and persisting pain.
Gepan® instill contains highly purified and specially processed chondroitin sulphate, an important component of the GAG-layer. The protective layer is restored again, the bladder is protected and in this way the typical symptoms of chronic forms of cystitis are relieved or prevented. Gepan® instill is therefore an effective, temporary GAG-replenishment for the bladder.
